Chalk One Up For The Good Guys

Saturday, July 29th, 2006

This week has been a very stressful week with the county fair and other business things happening. I had a customer come by ever week for the past month and ask a lot of questions about a product, in many ways I tried to talk this customer out of the purchase, being a technology company, most older folks (in our community) are not very happy with technology when they finally get it. They usually do not want to learn anything new. The same thing happened with this gentleman. I tried to explain to him to not let the installer leave or sign anything until he was completely happy, he did anyways and now is threatening legal action. To my surprise I let our affiliate for that product know and he went to bat for us.  (This is usually not the case, as customers are always right. ) He then told the customer that he had no legal ground as per the contract he signed and foolishly did not take my advice (which I explained to him every couple of days for a month). The guy finally broke after a heated discussion and confessed he could not run the device instead of saying it was broke and is now learning how to use it. This is why most businessmen get jaded after awhile. It is not our fault he can’t use the device, even after several demo’s at our store where he got to control it and learn and an in house training, yet he felt he could get all his money back and screw the business.(You know, cause businesses have all the money of the world, and if not they at least have all your money so they should be rich.) The fact of the matter is , especially with small business, most businessmen have no money they are just trying to keep the business paying for itself, let alone someday making a profit, which is why 75% of small business fail in the first 3 years. We are all doing the same thing everyone else is to survive and provide for our families, so next time you decide to go to a local small business, remember that they are in it for you, to be different from the bigger corporations and that they don’t always have all the money to help you out like bigger places do, so cut them a little slack, and you will find you may have even made a better choice by going to them in the first place.

Vista

Saturday, July 15th, 2006

So I have been using Windows Vista now for a bit and I am overall happy with it. There are a few things that I don’t like, such as the ease of connecting to my home network. It is very easy to do it just doesn’t do it automatically, and finding the automatic settings is a bit of a pain. They seem to be really, really focused on security and overall look and feel. Some things are very easy to use others have moved from what we are used to in previous versions. I really do like the new look and feel, the sidebar and maintenance options are much better. I know I will take some criticism for this but I love IE7 and Media Player 11. Getting codecs to work in Media Player 11 works much better, the overall look is much cleaner. IE7 finally has tabbed browsing and I think it is done very smart. I say “finally” and yet some of us remember Microsoft had tabbed browsing in IE3, but it was kind of clunky to use. The new visual effects are cool but not really necessary. I think this will be a good buy after the first 6 months it’s been out. OK, Ok enough of the pep rally for Microsoft for now. Next month I am going to try out the new beta of React OS, and see how easy it really is to run Windows apps on it.
